PFRS TRUSTEE ELECTION
Dear Brothers & Sisters,
As you are all aware, on February 1, 2019, the Police and Fireman’s Retirement System (PFRS) will be moving from being governed and controlled by the state to a new Board of Trustees of the Police and Firemen’s Retirement System. This new board will be comprised of 12 members, 7 of who are union representatives.
Three of these members will be active Firefighters and three will be active Police Officers. Of the three active Firefighter Trustees to be on the board, the PFANJ and NJFMBA appoint a member each. Of the three Police Trustee positions, the NJFOP and NJPBA appoint a member each.
One Firefighter Trustee and one Police Officer Trustee who will serve staggered terms and are active members of the PFRS system shall be elected by the active members of the system for a term of four years. The elected Police Trustee will serve for an initial term of two years and the elected Firefighter Trustee for an initial term of four years. Following their first term, all Trustees shall serve four-year terms. One retiree Trustee (Fire and Police) from the system shall be elected by all retirees, Fire and Police, from the system for a term of four years.
The PFANJ has appointed current PFRS Trustee Chairman and North Hudson Firefighters IAFF Local 3950 President Timothy Colacci to its dedicated seat on the new PFANJ Board of Trustees. Tim has been a long time member of the current PFRS Board of Trustees and has twice been elected as Chairman.
The PFANJ is endorsing current PFRS Trustee and Newark Fire Officers IAFF Local 1860 President Anthony Tarantino in the election for Active Firefighters Trustee. Tony holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Actuary Science (the discipline that applies mathematical and statistical methods to assess risk in insurance, finance and other industries and professions) from New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). Tony previously worked for five years at a small brokerage firm in New York City and was previously a Series 7 and 63 licensed broker.
Tony began his firefighting career with the Newark Fire Department in August 1989. He worked for 17 years at Truck 11 and received multiple life saving awards, most notably the Newark Firefighter Gold Award for life saving in 1997. He was elected as Treasurer of the Newark Firefighter’s Union and served in that position from 2002-2006. He was promoted to Captain in May 2006 and elected as President of the Newark Fire Officers Union in January 2011.
The ballots for the election of the PFRS Active Firefighter Trustee will be mailed to employers on or about November 12, 2018. Voting will take place from November 15 through December 14, 2018. This election process is much shorter than all previous PFRS elections because of the time constraints with the new
Trustee Board. Tabulation of ballots will be completed on December 20, 2018 with election results announced December 21, 2018.
The PFANJ is endorsing current State Investment Council member and Retired Jersey City Fire Officers IAFF Local 1064 member Michael Cleary in the election for Retired Trustee. Mike earned an Associates degree in Accounting from Hudson County College and a Bachelors of Science in Accounting from Kean University. He also holds an Associates degree in Fire Science from Union County Community College. In 2008, Mike earned the title of Certified Public Accountant (CPA). In April of 2012, Mike was appointed to the State Investment Council as a representative of the AFL-CIO from the PFANJ/IAFF and remains on the SIC through this day.
Mike joined the Jersey City Fire department in April 1988. He was promoted to Captain in March 2005. Mike retired from active duty in December 2016.
The ballots for the election of the PFRS Retired Trustee will be mailed to retired members on or about December 5, 2018. Voting will take place from December 6, 2018 through January 7, 2019. This election process is much shorter than all previous PFRS elections because of the time constraints with the new Trustee Board. Tabulation of ballots will be completed on January 22, 2019 with election results announced January 23, 2019.
The PFANJ is proud to appoint Tim and endorse Tony and Mike as Trustees. We urge all Local leaders and all active and retired members to vote in this election. No vote can be left on the table. This election is too important to you and your family’s future. Electing qualified individuals who have financial and accounting credentials is important. Our retirement futures are at stake!
If you have any further questions, please contact the state office or reach out to your PFANJ District Vice President.
