General Assembly and Senate unanimously passed our firefighter cancer screening bill (A6093/S4201)

On January 11, 2022 in Trenton the General Assembly and Senate unanimously passed our firefighter cancer screening bill (A6093/S4201). The Professional Firefighters Association of NJ has taken this bill from a concept to the Governor’s desk in just a few short months. Many thanks to Assemblyman Sterley Stanley and Senator Linda Greenstein for sponsoring our legislation as well as all the legislators who unanimously supported this important bill. Our motivation for this bill came from Edison Firefighters Local 1197 member Glen Seaboldt, who was diagnosed with stage 2 Non-Hodgkins lymphoma earlier this year at 34 years old. This bill mandates access to cancer screenings for full-time paid firefighters in this State enrolled in the State Health Benefits Program. The bill includes screening examinations for colon, lung, bladder, oral, thyroid, skin, blood, breast, cervical, testicular, and prostate cancers. The first screening will take place within the first three years of employment and a firefighter is then entitled to a screening every three years thereafter. Many thanks as well to the IAFF and the various state associations that provided research and information from which we drafted our bill.Senator Linda Greenstein Assemblyman Sterley Stanley International Association of Fire Fighters Edison, NJ Firefighters IAFF Local 1197
